The DAWN PATROL RENDEZVOUS
WAS FANTASTIC!!
August 10 , 2003 - R/C
Airshow, Monroe Co. R/C Flyers, Bloomington, IN
The Monroe
County R/C Club Airshow is an annual event to
raise money for local charities. It was well attended with pilots and the
public, and was well run, with pretty much non-stop action from Noon to 3 PM. It
was warm and partly cloudy, with a threat of thunderstorms, but we were lucky,
and they obliged us by staying away. I could fill this page with the events and
photos of the various "Acts", but I'll limit it to WW1.
There were two separate WW1 segments. The first flown by Bob Sireman's Fokker
Triplane, Sopwith Pup (flown by another gentleman who's name I will get), and
Charles Thompson's SE-5a. Art Shelton and Greg Emerick were up next, with Art
flying his old Pup again and Greg with his Eindecker. Greg actually owns the Pup
now, but Art is going to be flying it the rest of this season. The field is a
very nice grass strip, and this year was surrounded by very "healthy"
corn, which made it interesting (read that FUN!) with the two dead-stick
landings Mike Bealmear had with the Eindecker he's flying. The corn got the
second one, but no damage, and it was only a few feet from the field.
July 19, 2003 - Warbird
Fly-IN, Johnson County R/C Flyers, Edinburgh, IN
The 2003 Warbird Fly-In was much better attended that the first attempt last
year thanks in part to some last minute advertising and promotion by Greg
Emerick, the clubs new "Information Minister" (for lack of a better
title for now). CD, Larry Machlan, did a great job getting things set-up
and going, and handling the impound. Norm Boyle set-up and ran the concessions
so the pilots and spectators wouldn't starve.
About 17 flyers showed up and a sizable group of spectators as well, and all
seemed to have a great time. The weather was warm, but not terribly so.
Art Shelton, Greg Emerick and Boyd Helstom with their Eindeckers, and Lou
Schmalz with his Pup had a great time "mixing it up" for the crowd on
a couple of flights. The star of the show was a giant scale B-17. Although
not WW1, it deserves a mention for it's flights were a real crowd pleaser. The
golfers next to the field even stopped to watch and applaud the B-17!
Back to WW1 stuff..... (There should be a more in-depth story on the Warbird
Fly-In on the Johnson Co. R/C Flyers
web site soon). I counted 7 of the attending flyers with WW1 aircraft,
From a 1/4 scale Pup to a tiny (aprox. 1/16 scale) electric Dr1 and
Camel that had us all amazed! Plans are already being made for 2004, and
we're hoping that better scheduling won't have us competing with the Dayton Air
Show and earlier promoting will bring in more great Warbirds.
June 21, 2003 - Hobby
Hawks R/C Club Fly-In - Vernon, IN
The Vernon Indiana Model Airport was the location for the fly-in. It was well
attended, and we connected up with Billy Thompson and his great looking Fokker Dr1. We had
hope Larry Wilson would be there with his Bristol Scout. Larry was there, but
Scout was at home. It was pretty windy early on, with a pretty good crosswind at
times. Greg and Art worked on formation take-offs and flying with their
Eindeckers and put on a good show. We still need some Allied guys to mix it up
with! Billy Thompson had his Triplane up a couple of times, and the gusty
winds made it exciting for him!). Mike tried a flight with his Triplane after
the wind died down. He's still struggling with the handful a Triplane can be on
the ground (for him anyway <g>), and tried to pull it off a little
prematurely resulting in some minor damage to the upper wing. All in all,
it was a good day.
June
6-8th, 2003 - Muncie Indiana - AMA Home Coming
With the 2003 being the Centennial of flight, Home Coming looked like it was
going to be ripe with Vintage R/C aircraft and it would be the perfect venue for
us to continue getting the word out about R/C Dawn Patrol. Unfortunately,
things did not work out for us as planned. Art Shelton lost his father to Emphysema
May 29th and, understandably, Art wasn't up to going. Mike couldn't make
it, his son Ted's high school graduation open house was June 7th, so he was out
for Saturday. Mike and Greg did go up Sunday the 8th just to see what was
going on. It turned out not much. The big flying day was Saturday,
and there were but a few there when we arrived about Noon. We each got a
flight in, Greg with his Eindecker, and Mike with his Cloud Dancer (the Triplane
wasn't ready, or more accurately, Mike wasn't ready), before the weather turned lousy,
and the rains came in. It was fun trip never the less. We'd heard that
there had been a number of WW1 planes there on Saturday (three Eindeckers up
together at one point apparently!). We'll try to do better next year. We did
get a chance to take a tour of the impressive AMA museum. Click
here to see some of the great looking WW1 R/C aircraft on display. Very
nice!

April 13, 14, 2003- Tracee Field in Edinburgh.
A great weekend for flying! Although Saturday was a bit windy, Sunday was
fantastic! Art Shelton and Greg Emerick had their 1/5 scale Balsa USA Eindeckers
(see the pilots and planes page) out for
a number of flights both days, and Sunday, practiced formation flying and had a
blast. Saturday was Greg firat flight on his newly recovered Eindecker and
Sunday was to be the maiden flight of Mike's AZM 1/5 scale Fokker Dr1. Unfortunately
for Mike, he had a badly, and I mean impossibly, stuck (half on) spinner (see
more), that prevented him from flying the Dr1. He flew his "PFAKKER"
around instead (a GP .40 Stik).
