Art Shelton's 1/3 Scale Fokker E-1 Eindecker project
 |
 |
Fokker Eindecker E-1, E1/15, 1/3 scale. 116" wingspan, fuse 94", weight
37lbs. Covering is Solartex Linen (satin finish) and markings (when
completed) will be combination of pre-painted Coverite (black) and paint
followed with clear coat of water based polyurethane.
Power is Zenoah Z-445 twin cylinder gas (ample
without too much overkill). Prop is PK 24 x 10 wood. After engine
break-in, a reworked Zinger 26 x 10 wood prop will be used.
Model is scratch built and very loosely
based on Bob Holman plans of 1/4 scale Fokker E-III. Fuse is luan ply
(door skin) box with bass wood stick built rear section. Tail is full
flying in design built around carbon fiber spar and balsa ribs with rudder
outline of plywood and stab outline of ash dowel and basswood sticks.
Undercarriage is 1/4 in and 3/16 in music wire with a home made steel ball
bearing bell-crank assembly to facilitate the wing warping. Wing panels
are of bass wood leading edge (router shaped) and spars with balsa ribs, cap
strips & trailing edge. Wing tips (leading edge along the tip) are
six laminations of 1/16" balsa with the rear (rounded) portion
being aircraft plywood. Wing wires are 1/16" bronzed (easy
soldiering) cables (from Hobby Lobby bulk package w/ plastic outer
housing). Cowl is from Arizona Model
Aircrafters and wheels are from Balsa USA.
Building time is approximately 10 to 12 months
spread out over a 3 year period. Scale detailing is expected to take
another 2 months.
Radio is Futaba Super 8 with 1 each standard
throttle servo, 3 each S-134 giant scale servos (1 on rudder & 2 on
wing warping) and 2 each 9202 servos on the full flying stab.
